Tissage is a Jaipur maker of hand knotted and hand woven rugs, established in 1974 as a fourth generation family firm and still working from a 300 year old haveli in the city. In 2010 the house moved into contemporary hand knotted rugs drawn from abstract art, and it takes its name from the French word for weaving. Nikhil Kapoor is creative director and the studio works in wool, silk, mohair, linen and cashmere. Its collections include Impasto, Mirage, Metallica Reserve, Metal Art, Chroma People and Aanya, with Metallica Reserve made from wild silk and Aanya from blends of wool and silk. By the company's own account a single hand knotted piece takes about 5,000 man hours, with more than 600 hours spent on colour, over 21 weeks on the loom and more than 50 days of finishing. The rugs are carried by specialist boutiques and interior designers, and the firm also trades under the name Kapoor Carpets.
Impasto takes its cue from master painters and the thick layering of paint, translated into knotted pile. Tissage builds its collections in hand knotted and hand woven construction in wool, silk, mohair, linen and cashmere.
Mirage sets transitional order against modern fluidity, and the company notes that the rug reads differently depending on how far away the viewer stands. It is worked in the studio's hand knotted range in Jaipur.
Metallica Reserve draws on Ottoman textiles with what the studio calls a rock and roll spirit, bold and wild in feel. The pieces are made from 100 percent wild silk.
Metal Art is built around the shapes and surfaces of ordinary everyday metallic objects, with an edgy look that stays mindful of simplicity. Like the rest of the range it is hand knotted in Jaipur.
Chroma People imagines a mythical world where colour was once neglected, and tells the story of a tribe that found its purpose in the reverence of colour. It is one of the narrative collections Tissage shows beside Impasto and Mirage.
Aanya is drawn from vintage Japanese charcoal drawings and the artist's reading of nature. Multiple blends of wool and silk are used across the pieces to accentuate the design.
