Bhadohi, India
The Art International manufactures and exports handmade rugs from Quazipur in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. Weaving in the family goes back to 1962, the business was established in 1975, and it has traded under the present name since 2008. Production covers hand-knotted rugs, hand-knotted Moroccan and Indo-Tibetan designs, hand-tufted and handloom rugs, hand-woven flatweaves, and pillows and cushions. The work is carried by more than 50 independent weavers and 25 employed artisans. Wool is sorted, washed and sun-dried for two to three days, then carded and spun on the charkha; pot dyeing and vegetable dyeing are both still in use, with dyed yarn sun-dried for one to three days. Designs are drawn curvilinear, geometric and figural. Finished rugs are washed, stretched and clipped before dispatch. Custom rugs are made to order.
