Kaati Carpets is a handmade rug studio founded in 2016 by Nikita Khanna, who the company says brings four generations of family rug making behind her. The studio works in hand knotted, hand tufted, hand woven and flat weave constructions, in wool, pure mulberry silk, bamboo silk, saree silk, jute and leather. Its catalogue is sorted by style into modern, transitional, traditional, abstract, tribal, geometric, natural, ombre and heritage rugs, with named collections including Kaati x Origin One and Topography. Kaati works with interior designers and architects on residential and commercial projects and runs a bespoke service, Kaati Studio, for custom pieces. It keeps a showroom in New Delhi and a studio at DLF Phase 1 in Gurugram that is open by appointment, and says it has worked on projects in the United States, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Malaysia.
Hand knotted rugs are tied knot by knot on the loom in wool, pure mulberry silk and bamboo silk. They run through the studio's traditional, transitional and heritage design lines.
Hand tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a backing cloth with a hand tool and then shearing the pile. Kaati offers them in the same wool, silk and bamboo silk yarns it uses across the range.
Flat weave rugs are woven without a pile, so the pattern sits in the structure of the cloth. They are one of the four constructions the studio works in, beside hand knotted, hand tufted and hand woven.
Saree silk rugs are woven from sari silk yarn, one of the material lines in the Kaati catalogue. They sit beside its wool, pure mulberry silk, bamboo silk, jute and leather rugs.
Kaati Studio is the bespoke service, where a rug is made to a client's own size, colour and design. The studio works this way with interior designers and architects on residential and commercial projects.
