Bhadohi, India
Global Rug Company is a Bhadohi maker of custom handmade rugs, founded in April 1999 by Gaurav Dubey, a chemical engineer. The company works in hand loomed, hand tufted, hand knotted and shaggy constructions in wool, polyester and leather, and builds to order across sizes, shapes, colours and materials. It runs an integrated plant at Mehboobpur that carries a rug from material preparation through to packing, and engages more than four hundred weavers and artisans directly or indirectly. Quality is headed by Sonu Dubey, who holds a doctorate in sonochemistry. SGS UK Ltd granted it an ISO 9001 quality certificate in July 2007, and it sells to architects, interior designers and hospitality groups.
Hand knotted rugs are tied knot by knot on the loom in wool at the company's Mehboobpur plant. Size, shape, colour and material are set by the buyer, and the company takes bulk orders.
Hand tufted rugs are made by punching yarn into a backing and finishing the pile in house. They are produced to custom sizes and colourways for architects, interior designers and hospitality groups.
Hand loomed rugs are woven on the loom in wool and polyester, with the plant carrying the piece from material preparation to packing. They are made bespoke rather than from a fixed catalogue.
Shaggy rugs are made in a long pile in polyester or wool. They are offered in custom sizes, shapes and colours like the rest of the company's range.
Leather carpets are woven with leather alongside the company's wool and polyester lines. They are made to order in the size and shape a buyer specifies.
