Genie Carpet Manufacturers is a New Delhi based maker and exporter of handmade carpets, rugs and custom floor coverings, with its manufacturing campus in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, about seventy kilometres from Varanasi. Production runs in house from yarn selection through dyeing, weaving, washing, quality control and packing. The catalogue covers hand knotted, hand tufted, handloom, shaggy, machine made, Axminster and nylon carpets, along with jute rugs, flat weave durries, area rugs and hospitality, hotel and auditorium carpets. The company works mainly in wool and says an intricate hand knotted piece takes two to two and a half months on the loom. It sells into the United States and Europe and lists a presence in Dubai, Bahrain, the United Kingdom, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait.
Genie's hand knotted carpets are tied by hand on the loom in wool, using the knotting technique its weavers have followed for generations. The company says an intricate piece takes two to two and a half months to complete and is offered across a range of colours, designs, patterns and sizes.
Hand tufted carpets are made by punching wool or cotton yarn into a backing with a tufting gun, after which a scrim mesh is fixed with latex to hold the fibres in place. The loops are then sheared flat to give a soft even surface that takes foot traffic well.
Handloom carpets are woven by hand on the loom by the company's trained weavers, using raw materials chosen for the finish they give. They come in a number of patterns and designs and are built to order.
Shaggy carpets are made in a long pile for a deep soft surface, in yarns dyed on the company's own campus. They are produced in the same Bhadohi plant as the rest of the handmade range.
Jute rugs are woven in natural jute fibre for a textured hard wearing floor covering. They are made to order in the sizes and shapes a buyer specifies.
Durries are flat woven floor coverings made without a pile. Genie makes them alongside its knotted and tufted ranges and offers custom sizes and colourways.
