Bhadohi, India
Fluffy Rug Emporium sits at Peerkhanpur in Bhadohi, one of the older weaving quarters on the town side of the district. The firm carries the full spread of Bhadohi constructions, hand-knotted carpets, handloom rugs and durries, hand-tufted carpets and felt floor coverings. Mahfooz Ahmad is the contact for the business. Fluffy Rug Emporium is a member of the Carpet Export Promotion Council, the Indian Ministry of Textiles body for carpet exporters, under membership number 8088.
Hand-knotted carpets, handloom rugs, durries, hand-tufted carpets, felt rugs
Wool pile tied one knot at a time onto a warp stretched on the loom, the slowest and oldest of the Bhadohi constructions. Each piece is washed and stretched after it comes off the loom, then clipped to its finished pile height.
Flat cotton and wool weaves worked on a handloom, with the colour carried in the weft rather than in a pile. The absence of pile keeps the weight down and makes the rug reversible.
Tufts of yarn punched through a backing cloth on a frame, bonded with latex and finished with a woven secondary backing. Pile height is set at the gun and the surface is sheared level afterwards.
Floor coverings made from matted wool fibre rather than a woven ground, the fibres pressed together with moisture and friction until they lock. Felt takes cut shapes and appliqué work that a woven rug cannot hold.
