Bhadohi, India
Designers Desire is a boutique hand knotted rug workshop at Nai Bazar in Bhadohi, promoted by the family behind Abbas Wazir P Ltd, which the company dates to 1925 and describes as six generations in the rug trade. It weaves Persian knot and Tibetan knot rugs in New Zealand wool, silk, hemp and art silk, blending fibres so that colour and texture shift within a single piece. Catalogue pieces are made at 10 by 10 Persian quality in an 8 foot by 10 foot size, and the workshop also takes custom designs. Its stated credentials are SA 8000 certification and membership of GoodWeave and Care and Fair, with compliance to the Labour Act and the Factories Act. The company says it wove a 15 foot 6 inch by 21 foot Sarouk design rug for the Bill Clinton library in Little Rock and has produced rugs for FENDI stores.
